2013 Annual May Harvest - Farm to Table Guam Corp.

If you were at the Annual May Harvest on May 8, you’ll agree that it was a smashing success. The farmers provided the best of their crops. The culinary students delighted our taste buds with their delectable dishes. The crowd was eager to enjoy all that was prepared for them.

If however, you weren’t able to attend, allow us to imagine the festivities together. People were trickling in throughout the morning. As expected around lunchtime, the small crowd quickly turned into a hungry herd. Among the herd we find college students, senators, university professors, farmers, and of course your next door neighbor. Not to worry though, Chef Kevin and his culinary students had been busy all along, ensuring every last detail was cared for. After introductory remarks, the tables were opened. The tantalizing smells wafting through the air were soon to become delectable flavors in the mouths of the guests. May I just say that the laguana or soursop tea was especially refreshing. I had made this tea in the past, only to find that it tasted like dirt. So I was most pleasantly surprised when I realized that this tea was quite delicious. For dessert, the coconut cream atop the guguria crust was a nice twist to a local favorite.

After a filling lunch, it was harvest time. Young and old went out to the fields. They were uprooting eggplants, picking out tomato seedlings, plucking green onions and chives, smelling the basil, and choosing their very own coffee plant. There were a few that were becoming quickly attached to some off-limit items. (Ahem…the full grown tomato plants…you know who you are) The kind agriculture fellows kindly acquiesced to their persistent guests’ requests. There was much variety and an abundance of plants to choose from.

After an a busy afternoon, guests left satisfied from their meal with a few new plants to add to their garden.

Many thanks to the GCC culinary students who did an outstandingly excellent job. And of course, chef’s hats off to the Guam Department of Agriculture for being such hospitable hosts.

All are invited to the Annual May Harvest held at the Department of Agriculture in Mangilao. See the variety of produce grown by local farmers, taste the sweet and savory dishes prepared by Guam Community College’s culinary students and take a plant home as a new addition to your garden. Learn about various farming practices and farming programs available to you. Did we mention that you can do all of this for free? Don’t forget to visit Farm to Table’s display and take our survey to get a free farmer’s hat. See you there!
