One Matson ship was damaged in a storm, and within a week, the produce and dairy shelves around the island were getting bare.

Everyone knew about the situation. Retailers and the shipper worked to relieve it. Cashiers commiserated with customers over it. Consumers walked a line between prudence and hoarding, hoping they would make it until the next shipment.
