Who: Guam Breastfeeding Committee and the Non-Communicable Disease Consortium
What: Breastfeeding Awareness Health Fair
When: Saturday, August 9th from 10:00am-2:00pm
Where: Micronesia Mall
Why: Our mission is to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding. The aim of the Breastfeeding Awareness Health Fair is to further educate the island on the benefits of breastfeeding, breastfeeding support products, and services available.
There are many immediate benefits for breastfeeding, such as passing important antibodies from mother to child, as well as giving infants all the nutrients they need for healthy development. In addition to the immediate benefits, breastfeeding also contributes to a lifetime of good health. On Guam, there is a high rate of diabetes and obesity. Adolescents and adults who were breastfed as babies are less likely to be overweight or obese, and less likely to have type-2 diabetes.
